Position Overview
The Regional Head, APAC for Edelman Smithfield will provide strategic and operational oversight for Edelman Smithfield’s business in the region, as well as serve as senior counsel for Edelman and Edelman Smithfield clients based in APAC or with interests in the region. As the Regional Head, you will work with the firm’s existing teams in Tokyo, Singapore, Hong Kong, and Kuala Lumpur to deliver best in class counsel and work product for the firm’s clients, build integrated global and regional teams, attract and retain top talent from across APAC, and drive growth for Edelman and Edelman Smithfield across the region, including into new APAC markets.
This role requires someone with deep expertise in financial services sector-specific communications. This includes deep experience running, managing and building strategic communications mandates for capital markets participants, such as banks, asset manager and private capital firms. In addition, the candidate should have a strong understanding of financial communications (M&A, shareholder activism, restructurings, etc.).
This individual will possess a strong business and commercial mindset, leveraging IP, and maintaining a strategic view of capabilities in relation to changing client needs and market dynamics. In lockstep with others, this collaborative leader will evolve the Edelman Smithfield offering in APAC, create market differentiation, and sustain a competitive edge for the firm.
Responsibilities:
Client Management:
- Build and maintain strong relationships with clients, serving as a trusted advisor and providing strategic counsel.
- Cultivate, win and grow multinational engagements for Edelman Smithfield.
- Lead high-level engagements for key clients, ensuring effective communication, leading to driving change and earning trust.
- Define and execute Edelman Smithfield’s business strategy for APAC in collaboration with regional leaders, aligning that approach with our client’s needs and with their business goals and target audiences.
- In partnership with the regional leaders across Edelman and Edelman Smithfield, oversee the regional portfolio of financial services and financial communications clients and drive innovation and expansion opportunities.
- Conduct research and analysis to identify key issues, trends, and challenges relevant to clients' industries and provide strategic recommendations and IP.
- Collaborate with internal teams to integrate Edelman Smithfield IP, perspectives and strategies with other Edelman solutions.
- Serve as a key, transformative leader within the Edelman Smithfield team globally.
- Identify and pursue opportunities to build awareness of Edelman Smithfield with an emphasis on building the financial services sector within APAC, in partnership with the market leaders.
- Actively contribute to business development efforts, collaborating with the regions to identify and pursue new opportunities.
- Enhance the company's reputation as a thought leader in financial services and financial communications trends through speaking engagements, industry conference participation, and publication of articles or whitepapers.
- Lead and oversee the implementation of key financial services and financial communications advisory services, marketing and IP initiatives.
- Advise, mentor and develop Edelman Smithfield team members in APAC.
- Spearhead initiatives to expand/launch marketing efforts and develop thought leadership.
- Provide daily strategic counsel, guidance, and leadership to regional team members.
- Attract, engage and retain top talent for Edelman Smithfield in APAC.
- Communicate a compelling and inspiring vision of future possibilities and direction to team; create a climate that encourages entrepreneurial behavior, learning, and collaboration.
- Drive capability growth and business growth strategies across the region.
- Partner with Edelman Smithfield team members across the globe to better fuel the overarching growth of the firm.
- Ensure constant professional development of team, consistently holding self and team accountable for behavior and performance.

- At least 15 years of relevant experience in Communications Marketing and/or related fields.
- A bachelor’s degree or equivalent work experience.
- Proven experience developing, executing, and leading strategic communications programs for large financial services clients or in a capital markets context.
- Strong collaboration skills within a global/matrix environment.
- Strong track record of working with C-suite executives to identify communications issues and construct and implement effective strategies to accomplish business objectives.
- Sophisticated understanding of how financial media operates and how to manage company news through the media.
- Passion for seeking out business growth opportunities among existing and prospective clients.
- Track record of identifying and developing potential areas of growth and ability to consistently grow a meaningful share of revenue in a global environment.
- Sophisticated background in financial services and financial communications strategy, PR (reputation work for asset owners, asset managers, alternative asset managers, investment managers, private equity firms, , investment banks) and journalism.
- Demonstrate ability to attract, motivate, retain, empower, and coach staff, and possess the vision, insight, and confidence necessary to manage and inspire a team with a standard for excellence.
- Demonstrate a diverse financial communication and/or financial services PR background as a senior leader for an in-house media relations/communications department or a PR consultancy.
- Strong experience communicating with a broad array of stakeholders to advance an organization’s business and/or product ranging from investors, media, and other partners to regulators, employees and/or other businesses/organizations.
- Enjoy working in a fast-paced, dynamic, and entrepreneurial environment that is highly collaborative and team oriented
- Illustrate a strong desire to help pitch and win new business and lead client accounts on a day-to-day basis.
- Possess strong written, verbal communication and presentation skills.
- Experience with P&Ls in an agency setting and a proven track record in management, leadership, and team building.

- Maintaining a consistent brand image and voice across corporate communications, ensuring alignment with the company's values and mission.

- Leading and coaching the corporate communication team, managing communication agency partners, and allocating resources effectively
- Support the Customer and Marketing Function in projects as required
- University degree holder or above, preferably in journalism, communications, PR & marketing discipline.
- Minimum 15 years of relevant experience in corporate communications and/or public and media relations. Experience in insurance industry is an advantage.
- Proven track record in leading communications and reputation management
- Demonstrate curiosity and eagerness to keep abreast of the latest market trends
- Excellent time management and project management skills
- Excellent communication and collaboration skills with internal and external stockholders.

- Understand the media landscape and communications trends, and be confident in dealing with media and journalists

Support the Corporate Communications team in its planning and implementation of the Company’s communications and publicity activities, media and community events, as well as the production of print and online publications and collaterals.
Key Responsibilities
- Maintain close liaison with internal departments and external parties and agencies to facilitate the execution of the Company’s communications strategies
- To be a key team member in organising corporate and community events
- Support the Company's interim / annual results announcement, interim / annual reports and AGM, with collaterals including but not limited to PPT, video, QA, press release, speeches, invitation, event logistics, etc.
- Act as a gatekeeper for key messaging of the Company and conduct editing of various forms of documents
- Help liaise with and review NGOs’ and community groups’ donation / sponsorship / membership / collaboration proposals and venue requests
- Maintain corporate website and social media platforms
- Handle general enquiries from the media and the public, as well as potential issues
- Assist in maintaining a departmental resources database (media, photos, publications) and archive system
- Act as a central co-ordinator and administrator of the team to ensure its day-to-day smooth operations
Skills, Qualifications and Experience Requirements
- Degree holder in communications, journalism, languages, marketing or related discipline
- Minimum 3 to 5 years of corporate communications or financial PR experience in an in-house or agency environment
- Excellent command of written and spoken English and Chinese, fluency in Putonghua is an advantage
- An enthusiastic team player with good communications, co-ordination and interpersonal skills
- Self-motivated, detail-oriented with an outgoing personality, can-do spirit, and sense of ownership
- Proficiency in MS Office applications

Job Duties
Corporate Communications
- Strategise and align communications efforts with broader business objectives, ensuring that the needs of our target audiences (merchants, press, partners) are effectively addressed through tailored communications
- Oversee the management of media inquiries and build proactive relationships with journalists and key industry influencers to boost visibility and credibility in our target markets

- Collaborate with internal teams to ensure consistent messaging and alignment across all external communications.
- Maintain and execute a comprehensive crisis communications plan, including detailed response procedures for potential and unforeseen crises relevant to the Fintech industry.
- Coordinate with designated spokespeople to manage media inquiries and public statements during crisis situations. Communicate transparently and empathetically with stakeholders, including employees, clients, investors, and the public, during crises to maintain trust and credibility.
- Bachelor's degree in Communications, Public Relations, Marketing, or a related field

Hong Kong Applied Science and Technology Research Institute (ASTRI) was founded by the Government of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region in 2000 with the mission of enhancing Hong Kong’s competitiveness through applied research. ASTRI’s core R&D competence in various areas is grouped under five Technology Divisions: Advanced Electronic Components and Systems; Artificial Intelligence and Trust Technologies; Communications Technologies; IoT Sensing and AI Technologies; and Intelligent Perception and Control Technologies.
It is applied across six core areas which are Smart City, Financial Technologies, New Industrialisation and Intelligent Manufacturing, Digital Health, Application Specific Integrated Circuits and Metaverse.
Over the years, ASTRI has nurtured a pool of research, I&T talents and received numerous international awards for its pioneering innovations as well as outstanding business and community contributions. To date, ASTRI has transferred almost 1,500 technologies to the industries and been granted more than 1,100 patents in the Mainland, the US, and other countries.
To support our constant endeavour to position Hong Kong as a world-class smart city and an international hub of innovation and technology, we are seeking qualified professionals to fill the following position(s):
Job Responsibilities:
Report directly to the CEO and oversee the following areas:
Ecosystem Engagement
- Foster ASTRI's leading position in contributing to and driving collaborations within the innovation and technology (I&T) ecosystem in Hong Kong, the Greater Bay Area (GBA), and internationally by gathering insights into key players, trends, government initiatives and upstream research channels.
- Initiate and execute new strategies to enhance ASTRI's leadership in supporting the I&T ecosystem.
- Develop the four established alliances in (1) Microelectronics Technology, (2) Smart Mobility Technology (C-V2X) (3) Fintech and ESG, (4) Contech and Protech.
- Create an ecosystem for building and nurturing technology talent in public and private tech companies in Hong Kong, the GBA, and abroad, while exploring alternative funding sources to support this ecosystem.
- Act as ASTRI's representative for public connections and speeches within the ecosystem.
Corporate Communications (Marketing, Public Affairs and Corporate Communications, and Public Mission)
- Lead a team in developing and implementing marketing strategies to support ASTRI's business objectives.
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams, including technology divisions, operations, marketing, finance, and client development, to ensure alignment of marketing strategies with business goals.
- Oversee marketing functions, including brand management, content marketing for online, digital, and offline communications channels, CRM, and liaising with industry, universities, and both internal and external stakeholders.
- Analyze and report key performance metrics to measure the effectiveness of marketing programs and campaigns.
- Develop and implement comprehensive corporate communications strategies to enhance ASTRI's brand presence and reputation and handle emergencies.
- Supervise the creation of compelling content for various communication channels, including press releases, articles, speeches, and social media platforms.
- Plan and execute corporate events, such as conferences, seminars, and product launches, to enhance brand visibility.
- Build and maintain relationships with media outlets, industry influencers, and key stakeholders to maximize positive media coverage.
- Drive and execute ASTRI's strategy for public mission and CSR-related programs, ensuring alignment with government policies.
- Support the execution of corporate strategies and handle ad-hoc assignments as directed by management.
Job Requirements:
- Bachelor’s degree or higher in Marketing, Communications, or related disciplines. An MBA is a strong plus.
- Minimum of 10 years of experience in marketing management and strategic marketing leadership and/or corporate communication, preferably in the ICT ecosystem industry in Hong Kong, with a robust network of stakeholders.
- Experience collaborating with the government, particularly in Innovation and Technology, is an advantage.
- Proven abilities in stakeholder management, driving collaborations, and forming partnerships.
- An assertive, resilient, and organized leader of high integrity, with sound business acumen and judgment.
- Excellent negotiation and influencing skills, with the ability to work independently and under pressure.
- Highly motivated and proactive.
- Excellent command of both written and spoken English and Chinese.

The appointment will be on renewable contract terms with a competitive salary and performance-linked variable pay. Fringe benefits include paid leave, medical, insurance coverage and contribution to MPF. The incumbent will normally worka five-day week.
