Qualifications

The Department

The Department

Our Racing Laboratory Department in Sha Tin undertakes various types of research and testing on horses and riders to identify the use of prohibited substances or prohibited methods. It plays an essential role in doping control to ensure the fairness and integrity of racing and other equine sports, and is a leading laboratory in the field of equine drug testing.

The Job

You will:

  • Work with a team of chemists and chemical analysts to analyse specimens for the presence of prohibited substances or biomarkers
  • Use sophisticated analytical techniques (such as chromatography, mass spectrometry, and immunoassays) to solve work-related problems
  • Perform regular calibration and maintenance of instruments
  • Contributes to the integrity of analytical results by proper filing of raw data files and by maintaining instrument calibration, maintenance and service logs
  • Preserving the integrity of samples by assisting (on roster) with receiving and recording specimens delivered to the laboratory
  • Contribute to conducting research and development work and implementing quality assurance measures


About You

You should have:

  • A degree in Chemistry or a related subject
  • Good communication skills in English and Chinese preferred
  • Strong sense of responsibility and good organisational skills
  • Preferably working experience in chemical testing laboratory, as well as experience in handling computer software and hardware, databases and IT systems

Why this role matters

Under the supervision of Senior Lecturer Dr Deborah Burnett, this Post-Doctoral Fellow position offers a unique opportunity to contribute to cutting-edge research investigating how the adaptive immune system recognises and responds to foreign and self-antigens. The successful candidate will employ a broad suite of immunological and molecular tools—such as flow cytometry, cell-culture, single-cell RNA sequencing, data analysis and in vivo models—to interrogate B cell and T cell responses in human samples and pre-clinical systems. This research aims to generate mechanistic insight into immune tolerance and autoimmunity, with translational relevance to infection, vaccination, and immune-mediated disease.

This position is ideal for an early-career postdoctoral researcher with strong technical expertise, excellent organisational and communication skills, and a passion for scientific discovery. You will join a supportive, collaborative and productive research environment that encourages independence and fosters career development.

Some Key Skills Required

  • A PhD in immunology or a related biomedical science discipline, ideally with a focus on adaptive immune responses.
  • Demonstrated technical experience in techniques relevant to exploration of the adaptive immune response including processing and analysing human and/or animal samples, multi-colour flow cytometry, cell sorting, ELISA, PCR, molecular cloning and RNA sequencing workflows (e.g., single-cell or bulk).
  • High attention to detail and excellent record keeping in both laboratory notebooks and digital data management systems.
  • Ability to work independently, take scientific initiative, and drive projects forward, while also contributing effectively to a collaborative team environment.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, including the ability to build professional relationships with collaborators, students, and technical staff.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities, and capacity to learn new techniques.
  • High levels of emotional intelligence, with a professional, respectful, and self-aware approach to teamwork and collaboration.


Desirable

  • Experience in managing mouse colonies, including ethical and procedural compliance
  • Prior experience working in a research team studying B cell biology, immune tolerance, or autoimmune mechanisms.
  • Experience with bioinformatics pipelines for analysing transcriptomic or repertoire sequencing data.

Major Duties and Responsibilities

The appointee will assist the Principal Investigator in coordinating a research project on immersive virtual reality-based mindfulness intervention to enhance psychological well-being for patients with rheumatoid diseases. The appointee will be responsible mainly for the following:

  • conducting literature reviews on relevant topics;
  • coordinating the recruitment of subjects;
  • assisting in the implementation of interventions;
  • assisting in data collection and data entry;
  • performing quantitative and/or qualitative data analysis;
  • assisting in report and manuscript writing; and
  • providing assistance related to the project.

He/she will be normally assigned to work not more than 17 hours per week.

Qualifications

Candidates should possess the following qualifications, experience, and competence:

  • a recognized Bachelor’s degree or above, preferably in psychology, social work, social science, mental health nursing or related disciplines;
  • experience in mindfulness practice will be an advantage;
  • proficient in MS Office Words, Excel, and PowerPoint; proficient in SPSS will be an advantage;

The appointee will mainly assist the research team in a research project “Development of Smart Analytic System with IoT Technology for Renewable Energy Feed-in Tariff in Suburban Agricultural Area” (R6494) . The appointee will be responsible mainly for the following:

  • Designing and validating coupled multi-physics models for agrivoltaics-wind systems under subtropical microclimates;
  • Deploying IoT-enabled smart monitoring systems for crops, livestock, and renewable energy generation;
  • Implementing machine learning algorithms to optimize energy generation, agricultural productivity, and cost-efficiency;
  • Conducting experiments and collecting data using IoT sensors (e.g., soil moisture, solar irradiance, wind speed);
  • Optimizing resource allocation (e.g., sunlight, ventilation) between energy and agricultural outputs;
  • Collaborating effectively with cross-disciplinary teams, including engineers, agronomists, and economists; and
  • Maintaining detailed documentation of system configurations and operational procedures, and publishing research findings in peer-reviewed conferences and journals.

Candidates

Candidates should possess the following qualifications, experience and competence:

  • At least 5 subjects with Level 2 in HKDSE or equivalent, including English & Chinese languages and Mathematics / Diploma (for Technical Assistant);
  • Bachelor’s degree in Engineering (Electrical/Mechanical/Agricultural), Computer Science, Environmental Science, or a related discipline; (for Research Assistant II);
  • Master’s degree in Engineering (Electrical/Mechanical/Agricultural), Computer Science, Environmental Science, or a related discipline; (for Research Assistant I);
  • Candidates with prior research experience in IoT, renewable energy, or smart agriculture are highly desirable;
  • Candidates with the following skills are preferred;
  • Programming: Python, MATLAB, or C++ for modelling and data analysis;
  • IoT & Hardware: Sensor networks, Arduino/Raspberry Pi, and wireless protocols (LoRa, ZigBee, NB-IoT);
  • Data Analytics: Machine learning frameworks (TensorFlow, scikit-learn) and statistical tools (R, Excel);
  • Domain Knowledge: Familiarity with photovoltaic systems, wind energy, and agricultural microclimates;
  • Strong communication skills, with the ability to effectively convey technical concepts to non-technical stakeholders;
  • A strong sense of responsibility, coupled with effective organizational and interpersonal skills; and
  • Proficiency in both English and Chinese.

Responsibilities
  • Work across all aspects of data from engineering to building sophisticated visualizations, machine learning models and experiments
  • Analyze and interpret large (PB-scale) volumes of transactional, operational and customer data using proprietary and open source data tools, platforms and analytical tool kits
  • Translate complex findings into simple visualizations and recommendations for execution by operational teams and executives
  • Processing confidential data and information according to guidelines
  • Managing and designing the reporting environment, including data sources, security, and metadata
  • Troubleshooting the reporting database environment and reports
Requirements
  • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited university or college in Computer Science or Math or Statistics
  • Proficient in data engineering, modeling and ETL - preferred experience with data sourcing and working with APIs
  • Experience with data querying using languages such as SQL, GraphQL & Python
  • Able to commit minimum 3 days per week for at least 6 months
  • Understands project tokenomics and possess good knowledge of the DeFi and Web 3.0 infrastructure landscape
  • Experience in using tools such as Dune analytics & Nansen
  • Understanding of addressing and metadata standards
  • High-level written and verbal communication skills
