About us
British Council Hong Kong was established in 1948. We moved into our current 'flagship' premises, situated in Admiralty, near the business and financial centre of Hong Kong, in 1997. We offer English classes on Hong Kong Island, in Kowloon and in the New Territories.
We are currently expanding our Corporate English Solutions training offer to both corporates and education institutions. We make use of Professional Skills materials that include core skills training such as email writing, presentations, interpersonal communication, report writing, grammar, effective meetings, intercultural communication, and more.
Role purpose
The role focuses on promoting and ensuring high-quality teaching and effective learning of English, creating an engaging environment that supports students in achieving their language goals. It involves maintaining teaching excellence through continuous improvement and adherence to best practices.
Additionally, the role contributes to the broader objectives of the British Council by supporting its cultural relations mission. This includes fostering mutual understanding and collaboration through education, helping strengthen the organization's global impact and reputation.
Role Accountabilities
The role involves planning, preparing, and delivering high-quality English language and skills training tailored to diverse learner groups and individual learning styles. The teacher is expected to monitor student progress, provide constructive feedback, and encourage learner autonomy. They will also contribute to developing, evaluating, and improving course materials and teaching practices to ensure that learning outcomes meet students' needs effectively.
In addition to teaching, the role requires completing related administrative tasks to specified standards and actively participating in professional development and performance management. This commitment to continuous improvement ensures that teaching quality remains high and aligns with the British Council's reputation for excellence in English Language Teaching (ELT). The teacher will also help strengthen students' understanding of contemporary UK culture and support local marketing and customer service initiatives.
The position demands strict adherence to safeguarding, equality, diversity, inclusion, and health and safety policies. It may also require occasional travel to branch centres or client locations. While most work occurs on weekdays, flexibility is essential to accommodate the scheduling needs of individual clients and teaching centres.
Qualifications & Experience:
- University degree.
- Certificate in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (CELTA) or Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL) certification from Trinity College of London
- Proficiency in Mandarin and/or Cantonese.
- High proficiency in English - full mastery of English across all 4 skills equivalent to user IELTS Band 8 in each of the 4 sections of the academic module.
- A minimum of 2 years full-time post-TEFL qualification (CELTA or Trinity Certificate TESOL) teaching experience gained from teaching adults.
- You should have experience in teaching Corporate English to:
- Adults (including corporates and/or education institution learners) aged hours)
- Experience in delivering corporate training (with preference for clients from the Bank Finance Service Industry, Retail Industry, and Technology Industry).
Important information:
- Contract type
: Fixed Term Contract (more than a year, depending on mutual agreement and business requirement - Hourly Rate:
You will be paid at an hourly rate that corresponds to your teaching qualification and experience post qualification, as stated below. For non-teaching tasks, you will be paid at an administrative rate for the briefing session & training would be HK$247 - HK$40 (TEFL-I)

Job responsibilities:
- To teach English Course (Cambridge, Trinity, Creative Writing etc.) or STEAM for children aged from 2 years to 12 years old.
- To implement lesson plans which are suitable to the needs, interests and future development of the children.
- To provide professional support and prepare teaching/ learning materials
- To communicate with parents on students' progress and development on a regular basis
- To provide support on school events and functions
Requirements:
- University Degree in Education or related discipline
- Must speak fluent English with clear pronunciation
- Must obtained SCRC (Sexual Conviction Record Check)
- Experience in Early Childhood Education or teaching experience in related field is highly desirable
- TESOL / TEFL holder is highly desirable
- Enjoy and dedicate themselves to stable and long-term careers
- Must be patient, responsible, friendly, energetic, motivated and love working with kids
