The IDC Engineering team provides various services to support the Alibaba global business growth. The team works with different project delivery teams to achieve that. The project team is typically composed of internal teams, which include the procurement team, TPM team, and operations team. Together, we work with outside vendors to meet the business's global needs.

Job responsibilities:

  • Collaborate with internal stakeholders to define project design criteria and develop the Basis of Design (BOD).
  • Manage consultants to implement the project from schematic design through design development to construction documents.
  • Oversee the design-build contractor to ensure the project meets the business and technical needs defined in the BOD.
  • Provide construction administrative support to the project manager during construction, including tasks such as responding to RFIs, issuing technical bulletins, reviewing submittals and shop drawings, and conducting source inspections at vendor factories.
  • Work with the Commissioning (Cx) Agent, contractors, and operations team to complete various levels of startup and commissioning, including Integrated System Testing (IST). This includes reviewing Cx scripts, closing critical punch-list items before IST, and tracking/closing global commissioning QA/QC items.
  • Collaborate with HQ and data center operations teams to incorporate the latest lessons learned from operations into new greenfield design projects.
  • Review engineering calculations from consultants and conduct independent engineering and cost analyses.
  • Research new designs, materials, and construction methods for data center HVAC equipment and related components.
  • Travel to data center sites for engineering studies, mechanical systems audits, startup testing, and full commissioning as required.
  • Provide guidance to design consultants and installation contractors, ensuring the quality of installed work.
  • Take ownership of tasks and work proactively to achieve goals with good team spirit.
  • Respond to emergencies on an as-needed basis.

Job requirements:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering.
  • Knowledge of HVAC systems, including direct evaporative systems, chilled water systems, condenser water systems, pump controls, Glycool/glycol, AHU units (DX, split, RTU, CRAC, etc.), CRAH units, raised floor systems, hot/cold aisle containment, and building management system/control automation.
  • Familiarity with industry standards, building codes, and safety regulations, including UMC, NFPA, ASHRAE, UBC, and LEED.
  • Strong troubleshooting and analytical skills.
  • Ability to deliver solutions for projects under pressure.
  • Familiarity with the construction process and cost estimating methods.
  • Willingness to travel up to 30%.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Professional Engineer (PE) registration in Mechanical Engineering.
  • A minimum of six (6) years of professional experience in building design and construction, particularly in data center or mission-critical design, construction, and operations.
  • Proficiency in software such as AutoCAD, Revit, Visio, Bluebeam, FLOTHERM, or Tileflow.
  • Bilingual in Mandarin Chinese is a plus.

What will you do?

In this position, you will join our growing Hong Kong Built Environment business, where you will play an integral part in a team of highly skilled specialists that ‘bring ideas to life’ for our clients across all types of Built Environment projects such as schools, data centres, casinos and a variety of Government projects.

We know the work we do is vital in assisting our world’s economic development and, it’s the technical expertise and the depth of knowledge of our people that really sets us apart. Here are the key things you will do to ‘bring ideas to life’.

  • Responsible to providing engineering support in MVAC design, calculations, reports, specifications and etc;
  • Site supervision, attend meetings for building development and/or mission critical projects; and
  • Communicate effectively with internal team, Clients, Architects, Contractors and Authorities from concept to detail design and construction administration.

We know today’s complex challenges can only be solved through bringing together diverse teams of people from across our business, so there will be opportunities for you to apply your skills and creativity to projects in other geographies and markets.

What can you bring to the team?

Firstly, you will share our genuine passion for re-imaging engineering and be someone that actively pursues continuous learning to help shape the future. You should also possess:

  • Degree holder in Mechanical/BS Engineering or equivalent;
  • 4-6 years’ relevant experience in Mechanical and Building Services disciplines;
  • Ability to produce sound designs independently with commitment to quality;
  • Ability to communicate with Clients, Authorities, Contractors, Architects, etc.;
  • Proficient in written and spoken English and Chinese;
  • Good organization and project management skills;
  • Self-motivated and ambitious individuals with desire to strive for excellence; and
  • Proficient with digital design tools such as REVIT, Bluebeam and Navisworks will be highly regarded.
