Department of Cultural Studies

Founded in 1999, the Department ( is the forerunner of offering a BA degree in Cultural Studies in Hong Kong. Our Master of Cultural Studies Programme, launched in 2003, gives students from mixed academic and working backgrounds the opportunity to reflect on and devise alternative ways to approach their ongoing practices. Our Research Postgraduate Programmes (MPhil & PhD) train aspiring researchers to develop in-depth inquiry into specific areas of interest. The programmes are designed to nurture global citizens with interdisciplinary, avant-garde, critical, and reflexive knowledge in the digital age.
We promote interdisciplinary research that foregrounds new ideas and drives societal changes. Our faculty members come from different areas of expertise, focusing on topics such as cultural sociology, digital media cultures, food science and technology, gender and sexualities, Hong Kong cultural identity, labour studies, migration and mobility, modern Chinese intellectual history, race and ethnicities, transgender studies and urban commons. Connecting cultural theories with civic engagement is the core of our values.
General Requirements
Applicants should have a strong background in Cultural Studies or other related disciplines with relevant teaching and research experience. Research experience on gender / sexualities, crip theory / queer studies, class / labor, race / ethnicity, artificial intelligence and big data will be a distinct advantage. The appointee should be able to teach and develop courses on methods in cultural research, critical writing workshop, gender and technology, crip theory and disability studies.
The appointed candidate will be a committed academic with a record of research and scholarship of international stature who will be able to demonstrate commitment to the vision and orientation of the Department and the University. The appointee should demonstrate a track record of quality publications and grants-based research in areas relevant to the department’s profile. Solid experience in administrative leadership would be preferable.
Appointment
The conditions of appointment will be competitive. The rank and remuneration will be commensurate with qualifications and experience. Fringe benefits include annual leave, medical and dental benefits, mandatory provident fund, gratuity, and incoming passage and baggage allowance for the eligible appointee.
Appointment will normally be made on an initial contract of three years, which, subject to review and mutual agreement, may lead to longer-term appointment with consideration for substantiation. Strong candidates will be considered for substantiation.

Applicants should possess a primary nursing qualification registrable with the local Nursing Council or an equivalent international regulator, and a Ph.D. degree, preferably in Nursing or other healthcare-related disciplines. They should have a well-recognized track record of research and scholarship, as measured by impactful publications, extramural grant success, supervision of research postgraduate students in tertiary institutions, cross-disciplinary collaborative ties locally and internationally, outstanding academic leadership and evidence of international recognition. Experience in developing and implementing curricula and innovative teaching to prepare students adequately for challenges presented within all aspects of the nursing field is essential. Those with less experience may be considered for the appointment as an Associate Professor/Assistant Professor, and provided with opportunities for academic growth, career development, mentorship and protected time for educational and research activities, depending on the appointees’ interests and accomplishments.
The appointees shall focus on the education of nursing students, postgraduate teaching and supervision, as well as academic research. They are also expected to perform administrative duties at the School and Faculty levels. Information about the School can be obtained at .

A highly competitive salary commensurate with qualifications and experience will be offered, in addition to annual leave and medical benefits. Applications are invited for appointments as Tenure-Track Professor / Associate Professor / Assistant Professor (several posts) in the School of Biomedical Sciences (Ref.: 532410), to commence as soon as possible, on a three-year fixed-term contract, with the possibility of renewal subject to satisfactory performance and consideration for tenure before the expiry of a second three-year fixed-term contract.
Applicants should possess: (i) a Ph.D. degree or equivalent in a related discipline; (ii) evidence of international recognition and a strong record of scholarship with a demonstrated ability to work across disciplines towards new research initiatives; (iii) a strong commitment to engaging students in inquiry-based learning at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels; and (iv) a strong track record of high-quality research as indicated by publication record and external grants.
The appointees are expected to participate in teaching biomedical sciences subjects relevant to human health and diseases spanning basic biochemical, cellular and molecular biology to whole body organization and homeostasis, across a wide range of undergraduate and postgraduate degree programmes including medical, biomedical sciences, pharmacy, nursing and/or Chinese medicine. They will also be expected to establish an innovative and well-funded research group that is open to interdisciplinary collaboration. Research should be at the forefront of biology and medicine, spanning basic molecular and cellular processes, developmental and stem cell biology, cancer, body defence systems, neuroscience, bioinformatics and bioengineering. In the course of career development, the appointees are expected to make substantial contributions to the School’s strategic developments in academic and research collaborations locally, regionally and internationally.

- A Ph.D. in virology, cell biology, or a related discipline.
- At least 7 years of research experience in virology, virus-host interactions, or human infectious diseases.
- A strong publication record demonstrating high-quality research.
The appointee will be expected to work independently and collaboratively, manage ongoing research projects focused on mucosal vaccine development, and publish in high-impact journals. Skills in mechanistic studies of mucosal vaccines, GMP/GLP toxicology in animal models, and proficiency in English, Cantonese, and Mandarin are required.
