RoleWe are seeking a highly skilled and experienced Underwriter - Marine who will evaluate and underwrite large & complex risks across Hong Kong, Macau & Taiwan, assess new areas of opportunities to achieve our ambition, maintain a profitable and growing portfolio, and contribute to the overall success of the organization.
Responsibilities- Focus on new business production and renewal retention across a high-growth Marine portfolio
- Underwrite all accounts in accordance with underwriting guidelines and individual underwriting authority
- Ensure underwriting processes are diligently complied with, focusing on key account information captured on policy administration systems
- Monitor performance of existing accounts/portfolio, and identify/recommend areas for improvement
- Build and maintain strong relationships with clients to enhance business retention and new business development
- Collaborate with internal stakeholders to explore cross-sell opportunities where appropriate
- Role may expand further to include Multinational Marine Programs, Marine Hull and/or Marine Liability classes
- Relevant 3-5 years’ experience in Marine Cargo underwriting/broking, with exposure to large & complex risks across Hong Kong, Macau & Taiwan
- Experience in Multinational Marine Programs and/or Project Cargo would be beneficial
- Ability to work effectively when in a pressured environment
- Strong problem solving and decision-making abilities
- Detail-oriented and organized disposition
- Competent in all Microsoft Product suites, with strong Excel skills
- Experienced candidates shall be considered for Senior Underwriter - Marine

Senior Underwriter - Property
Job Purpose/Role
- Underwrite profitable new and renewal business to meet LoB targets locally/regionally
- Negotiation of participation, pricing and terms and conditions
- Ownership of accounts / clients
- Develop and maintain strong relationships with brokers and clients
- Effective working within the global matrix
Underwrite Profitable business
- Underwrite new and renewal accounts to meet top and bottom line targets (local and/or regional).
- Underwrite and evaluate Natural Catastrophe Risk and Accumulation, ensuring an understanding of catastrophe modelling and interpretation of scenarios (for relevant LoBs)
- Underwrite International Insurance Programs (for relevant LoBs)
- Underwrite in line with LoB governance framework - e.g. Underwriting Authorities, global MSU,
- Ensure contract certainty is achieved on all accounts at time of inception
- Ensure utilisation of global pricing tools
- Ensure placing and binding of FAC Reinsurance prior to policy inception
- Ensure accurate policy documentation issued to broker (where AGCS responsibility to do so) or broker has issued documentation (where broker responsibility)
- File maintenance - ensure file is established (whether electronic or paper) and maintained for each risk and transaction handled
- Proactively support completion of policy administration and credit control processes
- Support development and execution of regional Underwriting strategy for LoB regionally
- Training, developing and coaching of less experienced staff (including junior underwriters, operations, credit control)
- Manage standard referrals from underwriters and spokes and re-underwrite complex business as appropriate
- Delegate work as appropriate
- Proactively support acquisition of new business and retention of existing business (including client and broker negotiations where necessary)
- Proactively liaise with DM on market management initiatives
- Positively represent AGCS externally to the market
- Proactively drive involvement of functional areas in Underwriting process, including e.g. MMC, ARC, Claims, Operations
- Develop and maintain strong relationships with key brokers and clients and other relevant stakeholders (e.g. risk managers)
Type of Experience:
- Proven track record in Underwriting profitable business in Property, in Hong Kong, Macau and Taiwan
- Demonstrated international underwriting experience (e.g. IIP) and good understanding of LoB products and portfolio
- Demonstrable, established relationships with brokers at peer group level and established within market
- Good understanding of regional / local LoB insurance markets and competitor landscape
- Understanding of legal and regulatory frameworks in the region
- Experience working in a complex, global matrix organization, alongside local and regional colleagues
- 5-10 Years' experience in Corporate Property Underwriting
- Risk Assessment and Management: Ability to assess risk inherent exposures and natural hazards relevant to LoB
- Pricing and Market mgt: Analyze current performance against benchmarks applying how the market operates and functions, the business needs and customer needs
- Contract Drafting and Interpretation: Design, develop and implement consistent, robust wordings
- Policy Management: Robust understanding of policy administration life cycle, information collection, policy issuance, premium bookings, credit control, cancellation.
- Communication & Presentation: Ability to express ideas and messages clearly, both written and verbally. Ability to "sell" an improvised or prepared audience winning story

Key Responsibilities- Underwrite profitable new and renewal business to meet LoB targets locally/regionally
- Negotiation of participation, pricing and terms and conditions
- Ownership of accounts / clients
- Develop and maintain strong relationships with brokers and clients
- Effective working within the global matrix
- Proven track record in Underwriting profitable business in Property, in Hong Kong, Macau and Taiwan
- Demonstrated international underwriting experience (e.g. IIP) and good understanding of LoB products and portfolio
- Demonstrable, established relationships with brokers at peer group level and established within market
- Good understanding of regional / local LoB insurance markets and competitor landscape
- Understanding of legal and regulatory frameworks in the region
- Experience working in a complex, global matrix organization, alongside local and regional colleagues
- 5-10 Years' experience in Corporate Property Underwriting
- Risk Assessment and Management: Ability to assess risk inherent exposures and natural hazards relevant to LoB
- Pricing and Market mgmt: Analyze current performance against benchmarks applying how the market operates and functions, the business needs and customer needs
- Contract Drafting and Interpretation: Design, develop and implement consistent, robust wordings
- Policy Management: Robust understanding of policy administration life cycle, information collection, policy issuance, premium bookings, credit control, cancellation
- Communication & Presentation: Ability to express ideas and messages clearly, both written and verbally. Ability to "sell" an improvised or prepared audience winning story
- Influencing skills: Ability to persuade and motivate others to act, without executive authority
- Analytical Skills: Ability to analyze highly complex data, from multiple sources, in detail; identify and resolve issues before they transpire
- Language English, Cantonese and/or Mandarin also preferred
- Degree or above in related discipline
- Completion of professional insurance qualification (e.g. CII or ANZIIF)

- Contribute to managing accounts; build relationships in support of customer/ business acquisition and retention (e.g. by handling a range of queries, providing advice to assist with the development of an account; implementing agreed technical standards, controls, practices and procedures, thereby maintaining underwriting discipline
- Timely update and use of Underwriting Scorecards and other MI tools & processes to proactively manage and improve the portfolios mix & performance and pipelines management
- Degree holder
- Minimum 2 years working experience in General Insurance program
- Good multi-lines underwriting knowledge mainly on Property & Casualty business
- Good knowledge & experience in evaluating middle market exposures as well as directing and assisting others in analyzing unusual risks
- Experience & knowledge in negotiating mid-market deals; demonstrate in-depth experience with middle market customers and delivering customer service options
- Proven experience in troubleshooting and overcoming difficult issues with brokers and creating and delivering programs for addressing the needs of multiple or large producers
- To be a team player
- Fluency in English & Cantonese; Mandarin-speaking is an added advantage
