Manulife Investment Management's Private Equity and Credit group provides capital solutions ranging from senior and junior debt financing, equity co-investments, and fund commitments to private equity managers with proven track records. The Private Equity Asia team is based in Hong Kong and is focused on private equity investments across the Asia-Pacific region through fund commitments and equity co-investments.
The Investment Analyst / Associate, Private Equity Asia will join an investment team that oversees a diversified and growing portfolio of fund commitments and equity co-investments across the Asia-Pacific region. The incumbent is responsible for supporting all aspects of the investment process, including evaluating investment opportunities, conducting due diligence, preparing investment recommendations, coordinating closing procedures, and managing and monitoring the investments during their hold periods.
**Position Responsibilities:**
+ Identify, evaluate, and conduct diligence on fund partners for possible investments across various geographies and strategies
+ Financial and industry due diligence to support the analysis and recommendation of prospective equity co-investments across various industry sectors and transaction types
+ Assist in managing and monitoring existing investments and partner relationships
+ Responsible for completing periodic internal investment reviews and valuations on existing investments
+ Lead private equity-related analytical projects and initiatives, including country and industry reports
**Required Qualifications:**
+ 2-4 years of related work experience, ideally in private equity, investment banking, or transaction/valuation advisory services
+ Prior experience investing in private equity funds and/or co-investments desirable
+ Proficiency in building and working on financial models and frameworks to analyze the financial dynamics of various investment opportunities
+ Undergraduate degree required preferably with a specialization in finance
+ MBA, CFA and/or CA designation will be considered an asset
+ Strong English language verbal and written communications skills to effectively communicate with senior management
+ Ability to work independently and with a minimum amount of supervision, demonstrating a high degree of initiative, judgement, and professionalism
+ Team player with demonstrated capability of working closely with team members and various internal and external parties

  • Manage, monitor, and provide guidance to the outsourced accounting provider.
  • Review individual partner capital account statements.
  • Calculate and review quarterly management fee, carried interest waterfall calculations.
  • Review capital call and distributions notices sent to investors from general partners.
  • Prepare working to check the allocation of investment cost, fee charge and distribution is in line with LPA based on the client’s procedure.
  • Reconcile cash activity to that of the general partners’ and the client’s book.
  • Collaborate with other teams throughout the firm, including tax, legal, treasury, client services, portfolio management, etc.
  • Support client relationship personnel on ad-hoc requests.
  • Assist with audit request and regulatory compliance reporting for the various partnerships and companies.

EDUCATION, SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS

  • BA/BS in Accounting/Finance with outstanding academic credentials; applicable coursework or internship in the field of investments or financial markets.
  • 3 to 6 years of experience working for a financial services firm or top tier accounting firm, with specialization in investment partnerships, or financial services industry.
  • CPA preferred.
  • Accounting experience in managing private equity, hedge funds or similar types of alternative products is preferred, but not required.
  • Knowledge of partnership accounting as well as exposure to financial reporting, auditing, and tax. Private equity experience is preferred, but not required.
  • Demonstrated team player, self-starter, and independent thinker with the ability to exercise excellent judgment.
  • Proven ability to work in a fast-paced environment with a high level of flexibility, accuracy, and attention to detail.
  • Ability to handle multiple tasks simultaneously and effectively manage deadlines.
  • Knowledge of Investran system is preferred, but not required.
  • Good written and verbal communication skill in both Mandarin and English.

  • Top academic credentials from a globally recognized university
  • Fluent in Mandarin and English (Cantonese a plus)

  • Humble and driven – not seeking a fast VP track , but ready to grow with the platform over time

Position Description

Associate - Private Equity Investment

The investment manager position primarily focuses on growth-stage private equity investments in the primary market, encompassing both USD and RMB deals in targeted regions and sectors. Candidates with relevant regional and deal stage experience are highly preferred.

Key Areas of Responsibilities

  • Collaborate with the team to identify attractive investment targets in the Pan-Asia region with a focus on Greater China region industrial development

  • Conduct thorough due diligence on potential investment opportunities, including research, competitive analysis, corporate structure assessment, regulatory trends, and financial analysis.

  • Build financial models and perform valuation analysis for target companies, ensuring accuracy and comprehensiveness.

  • Prepare investment memos and presentations for the investment committee, articulating strategic recommendations and returns effectively.

  • Support the structuring and negotiation of legal documentation, ensuring compliance with applicable regulations.

  • Monitor portfolio company performance post-investment, providing insights and recommendations for improvements.

  • Exhibit open-mindedness and a willingness to consider diverse perspectives and ideas in investment decision-making.

Requirements

  • Strong academic background from a reputable university; a postgraduate degree is highly preferred.

  • 2-8 years of experience in growth-stage private equity investment or investment banking; experience with Greater China growth PE transactions and deal sourcing is a plus.

  • Extensive knowledge in specific sectors is essential, particularly in: General Industrial Emerging Technologies; or New Energy and Advanced Manufacturing; or Healthcare and Advanced Technologies.

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills in both English and Chinese.

  • An investor mindset, demonstrating knowledge of the latest market trends and industry developments.

  • Strong market research and sizing skills, along with solid financial modelling and analytical capabilities, able to interpret complex financial data effectively.

  • Ability to work independently as well as collaboratively within a team, demonstrating leadership qualities when necessary.

  • Flexible and adaptable in a fast-paced environment, with a proactive approach to problem-solving.

  • Capacity to approach challenges with an open mind and a collaborative spirit, integrating feedback and learning from others.
